Focus and Control of Our Souls

I found a Doonesbury comic that I agreed with this morning. In it the author, Garry Trudeau made fun of fellow liberals. I was impressed by that and appreciated it.

(Usually he just hammers conservatives and conservative values.)

I enjoyed the balance.

I love this because it addresses a reality that affects all people, no matter whether they are liberal or conservative or whatever their stance is on anything, really.

Whenever we obsess on anyone or anything, that person or thing begins to exert influence on our souls. At some point....it controls us.

Think about that.

If you REALLY hate something or someone, do you REALLY want that person or thing to be in control of your soul and, therefore, your everyday life?

I don't.

The Bible says a lot about focus. Often the words "set your mind", "consider", "meditate upon" all have to do with focus.

I want to focus more on the Lord Jesus than I do on petty stuff.

“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth." (Colossians 3:1-2)

"Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls." (Hebrews 12:1-3)

I want to be focused on Jesus.

Only He has a proven track record of having spent Himself for me.
